Heather Sorenson, B.S.
Senior Biological Scientist/Lab Manager
Heather started her career at the University of Florida in 1997 as an OPS laboratory technician for Dr. William Castleman in the College of Veterinary Medicine. She became a Biological Scientist for Dr. Rick Alleman (also in Vet Med) shortly afterwards, working in the study of tick borne diseases (specifically Ehrlichias). Heather stayed with Dr. Alleman for 8 ½ years, and during that time was promoted to a Senior Biological Scientist. However, she decided to pursue a career outside of science and moved in January of 2007 to Birmingham, AL. There she became a zookeeper; first in the Children’s Zoo and then as a primate keeper for almost 2 years. Here she got the opportunity of a lifetime to work with gorillas, orangutans, macaques, spider monkeys and many other types of non-human primates. Science soon called Heather back to UF, though, and she began work as a Biological Scientist in the College of Veterinary Medicine again, this time with Dr. Jeff Abbott. Two years later she moved across Archer Road and became the laboratory manager for Dr. Shannon Wallet in the College of Dentistry. She currently is a Senior Biological Scientist in Dr. Wallet’s lab and enjoys working there very much. Heather loves to sing and has participated in community theater in Ocala, performing in their production of “Les Miserables” in 2013. She is very active in her church, especially the choir, and occasionally assists in leading worship there.
